So it’s not exactly Snake Plissken entering the maximum security prison of Manhattan to rescue the President like in the classic 1981 flick. But according to the New York Times, several big-name specialty coffee roasters and retailers are in the process of launching a coffee invasion of the Five Boroughs or are already up and running in the Big Apple.

Today’s story features news on Ecco, Intelly, Blue Bottle, Stumptown and more all having eyes on what they see as Gotham’s under-served coffee market. It’s quite a turn of events since Barista Magazine’s first feature on the New York coffee scene in our October/November ’06 issue. But it’s just one slice of the industry that has changed markedly in the last two years.
