Per tradition, this special World Barista Championship issue features the newly crowned WBC Champ, Hidenori Izaki, on the cover. And can we just tell you ”we LOVE Hide!  We’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Hide well through our extensive interviews with him for the cover article in this issue, and we’re positive he’s going to be a tremendous asset to the international specialty coffee community as our ambassador this year and well into the future.

We loved seeing Hidenori in his hometown of Nagano, where he works for Maruyama Coffee, and where he happily lives with his dog, Mancha.

Our WBC Special Section coverage includes lots more than a big article on Hide though. Thanks to the fabulous talents of photographer Kate Beard, we have some spectacular photography from the WBC event in Rimini, including portraits of every single national barista champion, candids from around the show, and some close-ups with the six WBC finalists.

These WBC Champ portraits are so great!

Coverage includes an article by Mr. 2013 WBC Champ, Pete Licata, himself, wherein he reveals the ups and downs of being the World Barista Champion. Interestingly, Pete trained Hidenori for the WBC, so Pete’s insights about our new WBC Champ are interesting, as well.

We’ve also got interview with the six WBC finalists about their signature beverages, which is pretty cool. And let’s not forget the amazing World Brewers Cup event, which saw Stefanos Domatiotis of Greece take top honors!

Of course, the WBC and the Brewers Cups aren’t the only games in town: In this August+September 2014 issue of Barista Magazine, we also feature great photos of and writing about the World Latte Art Championship, the World Coffee In Good Spirits Championship, and the World Cup Tasters Championship, all of which took place in Melbourne, Australia in May.

Erin Meister's fantastic exploration of fermentation and what it means to the way coffee tastes is one of the showcase articles in the August+September issue of Barista Magazine.
