Ah, Moscow… it’s such an amazing city. I’ve had the good fortune to travel there twice to spend time with barista champions from around the world as they took over Red Square in a coffee-making extravaganza event organized by Russian specialty roaster Soyuz. Specialty coffee in the great city within this enormous country is growing fast and furiously, with more cafes opening up all the time. Understanding the importance of coffee and equipment education during this extreme growth spurt, Nuova Simonelli will host the Coffee Education League on Saturday, March 16.

More than 60 participants are already registered to attend this world-class event, which will bring together some of the best barista minds in specialty coffee: Steven Leighton of Hasbean, Tracy Allen of Brewed Behavior, 2002 World Barista Champion Fritz Storm, 2009 World Barista Champion Gwilym Davies, and 2012 Irish Barista Champion and WBC finalist Colin Harmon.

The Coffee Education League, organized by Nuova Simonelli and Business Russia in association with the PIR trade fair, enables people from Russian chains and roasters to expand their knowledge, from exploring current coffee research and science, to examining the social component of cafe culture.

This event on Saturday is the first of three Coffee Education League courses (the second and third will take place in June and October. Each course involves passing an exam. The barista with the highest score at the end of the three courses will be awarded a trip to Japan to attend The Barista Camp, by Fritz Storm and Kentaro Maruyama.

Thanks for the education, Nuova Simonelli!
