Hooray, the details for the 2013 United States AeroPress Championship have been announced!
This year’s competition will take place during the Specialty Coffee Association of America’s trade show at the BUNN booth, #553, on Friday, April 12, at 1:30 p.m.
Registration opens on Tuesday, March 5. It’s free to compete, and there are spots available for each region. It’s first come, first served, folks, so be prepared!
There will be 18 competitors total, and it’s recommended that all competitors hold a valid passport. You wanna know why? Because if you win, you’re going to Melbourne, Australia to compete in the World AeroPress Championship, baby!
The rules for the U.S. AeroPress Championship are the same as last year, except for one awesome thing: competitors may use his/her own coffee straight through to the finals! There’s one condition though: the coffee must be a Colombian, and one that is preferably in season.

“This year we want people to get creative,” Joshua Wismans explains. Joshua is organizing the competition along with Brent Fortune and Scott Lucey. “In addition to the top three spots, there will also be a Most Innovative Method Award.  Two judges will be observing the competitors and handing out the award at the end. The more out there, the better your chances of winning.  However, the competitor must successfully present coffee to the judges to qualify for the prize. Innovative but unsuccessful brews are still unsuccessful.”
So set your alarm clocks on Tuesday and get ready to sign up to compete! The prizes are bitchen this year, coming from sponsor companies Aerobie (duh), Baratza, Barista Magazine, Able Brewing, and Espresso Parts.
Note: the official United States AeroPress Championship website is still being updated, so check back to it soon!
